THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARENTAL PARENTING STYLES AND THE LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE IN PERSONAL HYGIENE AMONG SCHOOLCHILDREN SD NEGERI 2 DEPOK

Abstract


ABSTRACT

Background; Parenting style is a critical factor influencing children's independence, including in personal hygiene practices. School-age children require appropriate guidance to develop autonomous self-care habits. A preliminary study at SD Negeri 2 Depok in grades 2 and 3 found that most children still relied on parents and teachers for personal hygiene. Various parenting styles were identified, including authoritarian, permissive, and democratic approaches. This study aimed to determine the relationship between parenting styles and the level of personal hygiene independence in children at SD Negeri 2 Depok.

Method; A quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 66 students from grades 2 and 3 at SD Negeri 2 Depok. Data were collected using a questionnaire on parenting styles and personal hygiene independence. Chi-Square test was used for statistical analysis.

Result; The Chi-Square test revealed a significant relationship between parenting style and children's level of personal hygiene independence (p-value = 0.000 < ? = 0.05). The correlation coefficient of +0.660 indicated a strong positive relationship. Democratic parenting (36.4%) was the most common type, followed by permissive (34.8%) and authoritarian (28.8%). The majority of children showed insufficient independence in personal hygiene (48.5%).

Conclusion; There is a significant relationship between parenting style and children's level of personal hygiene independence at SD Negeri 2 Depok. Democratic parenting tends to result in better levels of independence compared to authoritarian and permissive styles.
