Abstract

Background: Psychological stress in the form of anxiety is a common phenomenon in patients facing medical intervention procedures such as surgery. This condition is triggered by various factors, including limited information, concerns about the technical aspects and outcomes of surgery, the impact of anesthetic agents, anticipated post-surgical pain, and anxiety about changes in body image. If this pre-operative tension is not adequately mitigated, it risks disrupting the patient's physiological and psychological stability, which can ultimately lead to postponement of the surgery schedule. As a solution, non-pharmacological approaches such as finger-holding relaxation techniques are needed to reduce anxiety levels. This study aims to analyze the efficacy of finger-holding therapy in reducing anxiety levels in pre-hemorrhoid surgery patients at Sari Asih Hospital, Karawaci.

Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-posttest with a control group. The instrument used to measure anxiety levels was the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (ZSAS) questionnaire. Using total sampling, 30 participants were selected, evenly distributed into the control group (n=15) and the experimental group (n=15). Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analyses using the Marginal Homogeneity test and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.

Results: Evaluation of the treatment group involving 15 pre-hemorrhoid surgery patients using the Marginal Homogeneity test revealed a significant discrepancy in anxiety levels post-intervention with a p-value of 0.001. This indicates a significant shift in anxiety levels between the pre- and post-finger grip therapy phases. Furthermore, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test yielded a p-value of 0.009 (p < 0.05), thus concluding that there was a significant difference in anxiety levels between the control and experimental groups after treatment.

Conclusion: The findings in this study confirm that finger grip therapy has a significant effect on reducing anxiety levels in patients undergoing hemorrhoid surgery at Sari Asih Hospital, Karawaci.
