THE EFFECTIVENESS OF BOOKLET-BASED LACTATION MANAGEMENT EDUCATION ON IMPROVING BREASTFEEDING SELF-EFFICACY IN PRIMIPARA ADOLESCENT MOTHERS
Abstract
Background; Adolescent primiparous mothers are a vulnerable group in breastfeeding practices due to limited experience, knowledge, and psychological readiness, which may result in low breastfeeding self-efficacy (BSE). Educational interventions using simple media such as booklets have the potential to improve maternal confidence in breastfeeding. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effect of a lactation management booklet-based educational intervention on breastfeeding self-efficacy among adolescent primiparous mothers.
Methods: A quantitative study with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted. A total of 30 adolescent primiparous mothers with infants aged 0–6 months were selected using simple random sampling. The intervention consisted of lactation management education delivered through a booklet. BSE was measured before and after the intervention using a standardized questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test.
Results: The findings showed a significant increase in BSE scores after the intervention, with the mean score rising from 13.17 (pretest) to 22.73 (posttest) (p < 0.05). Additionally, the proportion of mothers with good BSE increased from 30% to 76.7%.
Conclusion: Booklet-based lactation management education is effective in improving breastfeeding self-efficacy among adolescent primiparous mothers. This intervention represents a simple, practical, and scalable strategy that can be implemented in primary healthcare settings to support successful breastfeeding practices.
