THE IMPACT OF CARING-BASED EDUCATION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF CARING BEHAVIOR AMONG NURSING STUDENTS
Abstract
Background: Caring behavior is a core element of professional nursing, shaping the quality of nurse–patient interactions and overall care delivery. However, a gap often exists between theoretical understanding and practical application among novice nursing students. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured caring-based education program in enhancing caring behavior development among second-semester nursing students.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed an accidental sampling technique involving 40 nursing students at Kusuma Husada University Surakarta. Participants were equally divided into an experimental group (n=20), which received a two-day caring-based training intervention, and a control group (n=20) without intervention. Caring behavior was measured using the validated Caring Behavior Inventory-24 (CBI-24). Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test due to non-normal distribution.
Results: Findings showed a significant improvement in caring behavior among students who received the intervention. The experimental group achieved a higher mean CBI-24 score (119.15 ± 0.875) compared to the control group (91.70 ± 11.425), with statistical analysis confirming a significant difference (Z = -4.816, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: The structured caring-based education program effectively enhanced nursing students’ caring behavior, demonstrating its potential to bridge the theory–practice gap. Integration of caring-based education into nursing curricula is strongly recommended to systematically cultivate empathetic competence, foster holistic care, and improve professional nursing standards.
