Abstract
Background: ICU patients are generally in life-threatening conditions, these conditions make patients unable to make decisions about themselves, family involvement in this condition is in the form of providing verbal, non-verbal information, advice, real assistance from people they know such as partners, parents, or other family members, accompanying sick family members, families must be able to recognize family health problems, make the right decisions where this is based on the knowledge of family members.
Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between family knowledge and the role of decision-making in critical care patients in the ICU. Method: This type of research is quantitative research with a cross-sectional research design. The sampling technique used accidental sampling totaling 52 respondents with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis was carried out using Kendall's correlation.
Results: From 52 respondents, 36 respondents (69%) had good knowledge about ICU, and 16 respondents (31%) had poor knowledge about ICU. Good decision- making support was obtained for 31 respondents (60%), sufficient for 6 respondents (11%), and lacking for 15 respondents (29%). The results of the Kendall Tau correlation test to determine the relationship between family knowledge about ICU and support for decision-making in critical patient care in ICU were 0.010 (<0.05), which means there is a significant relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable.
Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between family knowledge and the role of decision-making in critical care in the ICU.
Suggestion: Further research is needed comparing the level of decision-making support based on different emergencies.
