Empowering Women During Labor Through Lavender Aromatherapy: A Quasi-Experimental Study on Anxiety Reduction in the Latent Phase of Labor
Abstract
Background: Anxiety is one of the most common psychological problems experienced by women during labor, particularly in the latent phase of the first stage. Anxiety may increase physiological responses, prolong labor, and elevate the risk of obstetric interventions. Lavender aromatherapy relaxation is a non-pharmacological intervention known to produce calming and sedative effects through stimulation of the limbic system.
Objective: To determine the effect of lavender aromatherapy relaxation on anxiety levels among women in the latent phase of labor at Pulokulon II Community Health Center, Grobogan Regency.
Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a one-group pre test -post test design. Twenty-two women in the latent phase of labor were recruited through accidental sampling. Anxiety levels were assessed using a modified Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HRS-A) questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Paired t-test after fulfilling the Shapiro–Wilk normality assumption.
Results: Before the intervention, 14 participants (63.6%) experienced moderate anxiety, while 8 participants (36.4%) had mild anxiety. Following lavender aromatherapy relaxation, 10 participants (45.5%) reported no anxiety and 12 participants (54.5%) experienced mild anxiety. The Paired t-test demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in anxiety levels (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: Lavender aromatherapy relaxation effectively reduced anxiety levels among women in the latent phase of labor and may serve as an effective non-pharmacological intervention in maternal healthcare services.
